Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival returns to Singapore for the second time this year by uniting the world’s greatest music talents in a genre-defying, all embracing festival over 3 days, from 7 – 9 May 2009.

The festival opens on 7 May at the Singapore Art Museum, followed by Live in the Lion City at Zirca and satellite sessions in various clubs on 8 May, with the finale wrapping at the panoramic Siloso Beach on 9 May at Café Del Mar, where it plays host to the dazzling Worldwide Festival Beach Weekender.

(7 May) Get An Early Headstart!

As Singapore’s premier live venue, Zirca will play host throughout the night, starting from 6.30 p.m. – 11 p.m., to a Japanese revolution of music extraordinaires and unrivalled sounds. Japanese DJs and live acts have always set the trends and shaped the next wave in music. For this one-night only performance at Zirca, Toshio Matsuura of the infamous and highly influential United Forces Organization joins forces with veteran Gilles Peterson to curate a performance not to be missed.

J.A.M., front runners of the Japanese jazz circle and members of the exuberant Soil and Pimp sessions will spearhead the pack as they team up with the inimitable Jose James and DJ Kentaro for a spectacular night of cross genre pollination. To further raise the temperature of this red hot musical extravaganza, Singapore’s very own COSA NOSTRA trio and the thunderous Batucada ensemble, Bloco Singapura + Novo Bloco, will bang out a selection of percussion based Batucada tunes.

(7 May) Party On! – Club Invasion feat JACK BEATS (UK)

From 11 p.m. onwards till late, continue the party action at Zirca and get rocking with Jack Beats as this famous duo from London, United Kingdom, creates a storm with their very own style of ghetto bass electro anthems!

Get ready for a blast as Jack Beats presents to you the cutting edge sounds in the best of British house music, honing a style fusing House, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass and Dubstep with Electro and Baltimore Club. Musical influences from old school hip hop, garage and rave, to current grime, bassline/figit house and dubstep take centrestage as these two award winning DJ champs and veterans carve out futuristic, hybrid, bass music for clubs (like Zirca) without boundaries.

(9 May) Beach Weekender

Get prepared for a sensory overload at this 24-hour music marathon at Café Del Mar and experience a combination of the world’s most exciting live and DJ acts against the beautiful shoreline, lush surroundings and natural theatre of spectacular sunsets and sunrises. With festivities taking centrestage from 1pm on Saturday 9 May, expect a plethora of celebratory lifestyle activities for one and all, from sounds and sights to great food and sporting activity.

With two diversely sounding stages catering to different specific music tastes, music aficionados can catch Harmonic 313, Ku Bo, The Nextmen, Kentaro, MR V Featuring Oveous Maximus, Christian Prommer, Alex From Tokyo and Jack Beats, not to mention our very own local stalwarts such as Dubwise, Aldrin, Has, Tirso, Mugic, Ming and Miss Sangeeta.

To add to the line-up, the Beach Weekender will feature the winner of the first ever Worldwide Festival Asia Pacific Talent Search. Over the past 3 months, hundreds of young and upcoming music producers from all across Asia have submitted their music and original content. The winner of this inaugural talent search will be unveiled at the Beach Weekender by the veteran Gilles Peterson himself.
