Stereolab – Tony Humphries
Tony Humphries has entertained dance music fans across the globe with his unique brand of up-tempo dance soul music for decades.
In July 1981, legendary producer Shep Pettibone asked Tony for a mastermix show tape to fill in for a no-show on his KISS-FM NY radio show, and from then, there was no turning back. Simultaneously, schooled under the “I’ll-leave-you-in-the-booth-and-see-what-happens” antics of resident DJ Larry Patterson of Club Zanzibar, resulted in him gaining the residency in 1982.
Developing his creative experiences behind the recording studio’s control board only enhanced his style and magic. Artists like Mtume (Tony’s’ first gold record “Juicy Fruit”), Chaka Khan, Karen White, Regina Belle, Donna Summer, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, and The Cover Girls were all governed by the “Humphries handicraft”.
The creator of the ‘Jersey Sound’, Tony found has found himself in demand across the globe, with residencies at Ministry of Sound, London as well as Echoes in Italy. To date, he has played at more than 300 venues worldwide, and produced over 200 remixes for stars such as Janet Jackson, Donna Summer, Chaka Khan and the Jungle Brothers.
And despite the tremendous recognition, tons of awards and accolades from his peers, he has remained humble. Indeed, the man… the music… the legend, Tony Humphries.
